This is the birthstone for those born in January, whose Zodiac sign is Capricorn. The name Garnet appears to originate with the Latin granatum malum, the name for pomegranate, a bush which produces a red fruit with seeds thereby making the most popular shade of garnet, one similar to red wine.

Garnets given as a gift signify eternal friendship and trust, although the red colour is full of passion, it’s deep shade tempers any volatility associated with the hue. In this way garnet does reflect the values of constancy, friendship, and fidelity. Those born in the month of January have the pleasure of identifying with the beautiful, deep red garnet gemstone and all it embodies.

It is an old gemstone and references to it, dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays jewelry. These group of minerals referred to as garnets, comes in a rainbow of colours, from the deep red of the pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of tsavorites.  Garnet occurs in every color except blue and most varieties are named for their color i.e. Rhodolite is a purplish red. Today, the most important sources for garnet are Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.

Though garnet jewels are beautiful and can be quite expensive, the stone isn’t often considered to be a flashy choice. Garnets do need to be handled with care, however, as they are not nearly as strong as other gemstones, such as rubies, sapphires, or diamonds.

Tiffany & Co published a series of birthstone verses in 1870, which reflect the commonly recognized stones for each birth month. Here’s what the famous jewelers had to say about January:

“By her who in January was born
No gem save garnets shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity.”

Whether or not you believe a gemstone truly has the power to instill such qualities, they can at least be reminders that help us draw on our innate capacities for them. According to jewelsforme.com, mystical properties associated with garnet include healing properties for inflammatory diseases and all things related to blood. It’s also thought to encourage self-esteem and truthfulness, as well as warding off nightmares and depression.

Just as January is the first month of a new year, garnet is said to be a good stone to wear when embarking on a new venture or moving to a new city.

Have you got a Garnet in your jewellery box?

Quick Intermission

While I’m trying to figure out what to do with editing this blog, you might want to see what else I’ve been up to.

Read One Man’s Meat …

I had written a long 3 paragraph post today, with a quote about working hard and excellence in the first paragraph and the picture below showing you how I had achieved making earrings out of art clay…..

….but I got distracted while posting the picture and ended up reading other WordPress blogs relating to Jewellery. I stumbled on a blog where the blogger had asked for feedback and was responding to her readers requests, It reminded me that a friend of mine had advised that I write less words and put up more pictures in my posts.

I’m therefore putting myself out there today and asking you all to give me feedback on this blogging hobby of mine…..what do you think? less words? more pictures? more recaps of my day? or just pictures of jewellery and new items I’ve made.

It’s your opportunity to say what you think, what you’d like to see i.e. pictures of random strangers modelling my jewellery?

You can even say you hate the colours of my blog and it constantly hurts your eyes, I wouldn’t mind. 😀

FEEDBACK PLEASE! I’m actually apprehensive by the prospect of having you critique etransformed but go right ahead and comment!

Friendship: Dinner for two?

Image

Had such a fulfilling day today.

Went shopping for nick nacks for my jewellery party display and found the most amazing things, in the most unlikely places, the picture above is a glimpse of part of the display but you don’t get to see the whole thing yet, you’ll have to wait for the pictures on facebook :p.

Got in from dinner and Bible study a few hours ago and we talked about friendships.

The word friendship is now so dilute, it means very little to so many people. Others don’t value the tag and take liberties, hurting others along the way. Social media such as Facebook and twitter have helped make it possible to have “fast food” friends, fleeting internet relationships with no substance. People estimate and value themselves on how many friend’s, followers or ‘voltrons’ they have and not on how many friendships they have been able to build.

Crystal Clear

Hi people,

Its been a tiring weekend, delivered Lanre and Jaiye’s earrings on time today and the loved them ;).

Fara has graciously agreed that our green and gold bracelet be called ‘Avani Lantern’, so I’m creating one that she can write a short paragraph on, watch this space for ‘TRANSATLANTIC NAMING’ (#whisper cos Fara is somewhere in Scotland), hehehe.

I’ve got pictures of a jewelry set I made with sterlin silver and snowflake swarovski crystals. Its very dressy and not for everyday wear.

Behold Crystal clear…

NTP: Winners

Quick update: It was discussed amongst the transformed crew and we came to the conclusion that since we have only two suggestions by Shyne and Farah, they both win a pair of LULU earrings.

The winning name though is Shyne’s ‘Terreverte: Green Earth’ and with Farah’s permission we believe we have the perfect piece to be called Avani Lantern, a 10carat gold bracelet with green and gold dust swarovski crystals that Farah’s definition best describes.

Please email us at etransformed@live.co.uk with delivery details for your earrings, and promise to send us a picture with you in your earrings for our blog updates.

CONGRATULATIONS.

Bow down to the bow

Hi blogville,

I’ve been on a well deserved holiday, it was very short and packed and I was running all over the place. It’s good to be back on etransformed.

I realised people actually think the label is ‘etransformed’ its actually called ‘transformed’ but the blog and e-mail address are the electronic outlet for my creativity, therefore ‘e(electronic)transformed’.

Anyway while I was away I noticed that this summer is a lot about feminine clothes, flower prints, frilly patterns and the like. I realised that one feminine staple is missing though, THE BOW.

In honour of this age-old tradition I made a pearl, agate and Gold necklace, with a pretty chiffon bow, centred with a gold dust Swarovski cube. Its called poppy.

All hail!

bow to the bow.
